5 ESSENTIALS EVERY NEW RUNNER NEEDS

As an online running coach, I often get asked about what essential items a runner needs to get started. While there are many gadgets and accessories on the market, I believe there are five essential items that every runner needs to have to get the most out of their training.

A Good Pair of Running Shoes

Having a good pair of running shoes is the most important investment a runner can make. The right shoes can prevent injuries, provide cushioning, and give you the support you need. When looking for a running shoe, make sure you get fitted at a running store, so you can find a pair that is comfortable and supportive for your individual running style.

A Stopwatch

Timing your runs is a great way to keep track of your progress and push yourself to improve. A simple stopwatch or running watch is all you need to keep track of your times and set new personal records. Timing your runs can also help you plan your training and measure your progress. If you want to invest in a GPS watch that is great and the functionality is brilliant. I have always recommended Garmin products to all my athletes. However, I know many elite athletes and national champions who simply use the stopwatch on their phone, or the £15 Casio from Argos to get the job done. Don’t ever be put off by price tags.

A Technical Running T-Shirt

Technical running shirts are made of breathable, moisture-wicking materials that keep you cool and dry while you run. This is essential for comfort and can prevent chafing or irritation during longer runs. Invest in a few high-quality technical shirts to keep you comfortable on all your runs. If you live in the UK, you’re probably going to need a good rain jacket as well!

A Pair of Headphones

Now this is not really an essential, however, Headphones can come in handy, especially during those days you don’t want to head out the door. Having your favourite music or podcast to listen to can make it a lot more enjoyable. A good pair of headphones will stay in place while you run and have good sound quality. Make sure to keep the volume at a safe level so you can still hear traffic and other hazards while you run.

A Fully Personalised Training Program

Finally, the most important item a runner can have is a fully personalised training program. This is where I come in as an online running coach. A personalised training program takes into account your individual goals, fitness level, and schedule to create a plan that will help you reach your potential. With a personalised training program, you will have a plan to follow, and I will be there to support you every step of the way.
