Having a good pair of running shoes may be the most important thing you need to start running. The next is having a great coach in your corner. There is a reason why the best athletes in the world have one. A coach wears many hats., from setting a personalised training plan to providing mental support, there isn’t a lot that a coach doesn’t do. Below I have listed 3 key reasons why you need a running coach.

 

1.     Train Smarter – A running coach uses their previous experiences and formal education to create a fully personalised training plan for their athlete. One that should challenge an athlete in a positive way to allow for progress to be made but not one that is too challenging that an athlete becomes demotivated. They will know when an athlete can push a little harder or if they need to back off. This will help you reach your goals in a safe and effective manner.

 

2.     Accountability – Now your coach has just provided you with the blueprints to your success. However, it is pretty useless if you don’t act on this plan. You need to put in the work to be successful and a coach can ensure you do this. We all need some gentle encouragement from time to time as motivation is a fleeting emotion. A great coach will understand their athlete, almost as well as they know themselves and with this comes the understanding of what motivates the athlete to keep going and stay consistent. After all, it is consistency that leads to great performance.

 

3.     Provide Perspective We all have them days when we don’t perform as expected in training or in races. A running coach will be able to rethink your mindset and look at things from a different angle. We runners can be pretty harsh on ourselves and it is the coach’s job to help us zoom out and look at the bigger picture.
